Astrid:  How do you choose a charity to raise funds for?

Melanie vs MelissaSarah: Every year we, the founders - Lucy O'Neill, Sofia Ramirez, and myself, sat down and thought about what cause we want to support. We had Yellow Brick House meet with us and tell us about the shelter. The story about women and their families needing a place to go that is protected and the overcrowding they were experiencing was all it took for us to know this was the cause we needed to support.

Astrid: Do you have any other events planned in the future?

Sarah: We are really passionate and focused on our event on Sept. 30 in Toronto. We usually take a month off after the event and decide when we will schedule the next event.

Astrid: How long have you been involved in Muay Thai kickboxing?

Sarah: I have been involved in Muay Thai kickboxing for over 5 years. I have trained with Ajahn Suchart. But my day-to-day training is under Kru Clifton Brown, who is a world champion fighter from Toronto. Clifton is the best teacher a person can have in this sport. His experience and understanding of the traditional Muay Thai technique is unlike anyone else. His passion for the sport is felt in every training session. And, his focus on conditioning has completely overhauled my body.

Astrid: How does Chicks that Kick support their activities?

yiola vs jamieSarah: We are truly a grassroots organization. We rely on the support of Thai boxing gyms in Ontario and Canada. We also seek out sponsors from our community. People have been very generous with us - especially the founding member gyms of Siam No. 1, KruDar Muay Thai and Totum Life Science.

Astrid: Are there any branches in other cities, states, or countries?

Sarah: We have talked about this a few times. We would love for a group of women to get together in another country and take our model to start a Chicks that Kick somewhere else. I think that is a great dream to have! I would love to have a program where we would have fighters come from all over the world to participate at Chicks that Kick. Anyone interested?

If anyone in the world would like to support Chicks that Kick we are always looking for donations to our silent auction or for raffles at our event.

Women today have the opportunity to participate in any sport or activity they want - this wasn't true only 40 years ago. We hope more women come and check out Muay Thai and other martial arts - it can change your life, it has changed the lives of the Chicks that Kick.
